Unit 4 Blog

For the last portion of this final semester was a bit of a hectic and confusing one, but everything, for the most part, seemed to work out smoother than what I imagine most people thought would be. At the beginning of this whole change caused from the virus, I was a bit skeptical on how certain classes would be able to continue without losing a lot of important material within the courses. Although it did seem near impossible, I was quite surprised on how smoothly it went for the most part. I think that after all of this mess occurred, many people started to realize the effects it would have on their, mental health, physical health, and educational opportunities much more than before. At first, I was pretty bummed that I would not be able to go out and see the people I haven't been able to catch up with which was kind of upsetting. A lot of people, including myself, started to realize how much we all took being able to freely see someone for granted. One specific issue my family an...

Unit 3 Blog

During our time going through unit three, we learned a lot about wikipedia and mostly everything there is to know about editing, rules, etc. throughout the multiple training exercises done in training. We first learned about how to edit wikipedia pages and how to find reliable sources, make drafts, add images, make your work a little better, etc. which was very helpful to write a new, effective wikipedia page, or make changes/add information in an already published page.  Another important part we learned in this section was how to evaluate wikipedia and specifically what it is used for. We learned a lot about it, such as knowing wikipedia has a neutral point of view, meaning there should be no debate or trying to influence readers or sharing personal experiences/opinions. Another important thing to know is that wikipedia is free content, so you need to make sure everything you put on there is actually okay to put there. It is very important to not plagiarize because it could also ...

Unit 2 Blog

During unit 2 of this class, we learned and talked about the many ways of how social media is used to tell stories, sell things, or to just inform the user on a certain topic. Different platforms to demonstrate this are, for example, Instagram, Twitter, YouTube, Snapchat, Ebay, Twitch and many more. We also read an article explaining creative ways on how a user can use any of these social media platforms to tell some type of story or experience. Some of these ways include photo albums, videos, live streams, social media "stories," gifs, or even spreading a new hashtag for something specific.  An example of one of these we went over in class includes a post written on Ebay about a man "selling his blackness" where he explains how his blackness can be used as a benefit, like for dating black people, essays or scholarships for black people, or for making jokes about other black people. This whole post sounds like a joke and is kind of interesting, but could also be ...

Listicles

Listicles are used way more often than you may think and are actually a good way of displaying information. A listicle mainly consists of a title that is brief, but tells what the whole text is going to be about, in general. Then there are usually sub-titles with a picture, gif, video, etc, below it and the remaining main text below that. Listicles may be used in places that you have never noticed liked social media, magazines, newspapers, etc. They are commonly used for a couple main reasons. First, they are an easy and quick read which makes them useful for fast paced work like we mostly have now in the world. Another reason they are commonly used is because of the headlines used in them as they are usually creative and catch the attention of the reader to get them immediately interested in what the listicle is going to talk about.

About Me- Weekly Response 1

Image
Hello, my name is Darren Brautigam and I am a sophomore at the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown pursuing the Multimedia and Digital Culture major. I was born and raised in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and am the youngest in my family with an older sister and older brother. I have always been intrigued in the magic of photoshop and unique photo editing, so I figured this major would fit pretty well for my interests. The main purpose of this blog and future ones is to discuss and give my opinions on certain readings done throughout the course.
